Azerbaijani transport sector increases freight traffic

Transport sector of Azerbaijan transported 103.3 million tons of cargo in January-June, which is 3.7 percent more than the same period in 2011, Azerbaijani State Committee on Statistics told Trend on Wednesday.

Some 73.5 percent of the goods from the total amount, transported in January-June, account for the private sector. Some 54.1 percent of goods were transported by road, 28.9 percent - pipelines, 10.7 percent - rail and 6.3 percent - by sea.

Some 761.2 million people were transported by passenger transport in January-June, which is 8.8 percent more than in January-June 2011. Most of the passengers were transported by road transport (86.6 percent) and metro (13.1 percent).

Some 11 million tons of cargo was transported by rail in January-June, which is 4.9 percent more than in January-June 2011.

Some 6.5 million tons of cargo was transported by sea in January-June, which is 5.3 percent more than in January-June 2011. The entire volume of transported cargo accounted for international operations. The volume of cargo handled at ports of Azerbaijan in January-June amounted to 6.2 million tons, or 0.4 percent more than in January-June last year.

Some 55.9 million tons of cargo was transported by road transport, which is 7.5 percent more than in January-June 2011. The volume of passenger traffic totaled 659.3 million (increase by 8.9 percent). Some 96.4 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.6 percent - by cars.

Some 99.9 million people were transported by the subway, increasing by 9 percent.
Some 685,200 passengers were transported by air transport, which is 14.5 percent more than the same period in 2011. Some 1.5 percent of traffic by this kind of transport accounted for private sector. Volume of freight traffic via air transport hit 28,400 tons.

Some 23.4 million tons of cargo was transported through the Eurasian transport corridor at the territory of Azerbaijan in January-May 2012, which is 4.6 percent more than in the first quarter of 2011. Some 107.8 million people were transported through the corridor, which is 7.7 percent more than in January-May 2011.
