Jointly with the UN, Turkmenistan will hold an international conference on transport in September 2014, a message from the government of Turkmenistan said on March 12.

"Currently, the main task in this sphere is the integration of Turkmenistan's transport system into the international communication network. The creation of transport and logistic centers that are needed for multi-modal transportation will be one of the expected results," according to the Turkmen government's message.

Jointly with other countries and with support of international institutes, Turkmenistan proposed to discuss the possibilities of creating a model highway for Central Asia, according to the message from the country's government.

Earlier, the UN News Center said that Turkmenistan's initiative on holding a forum on transport problems was put forward in early October 2013, in a general debate at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Turkmenistan borders with Kazakhstan, Iran, Russia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan onshore and Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran offshore.

The Institute of Strategic Planning and Economic Development of Turkmenistan said in 2013 that the main road network in the country will be fully reconstructed and new motorways with all necessary road infrastructures will be constructed by 2015. Their total length will be nearly 1,700 kilometres.
