President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani intends to visit Uzbekistan soon to sign a number of cooperation memorandums.
One of the main topics of discussions will be the railway communications between the two countries, Uzbek media reported.
The officials will discuss the construction of a railway from Balkh Province through the four provinces of Afghanistan to Iran. Another rail line will be constructed between Afghan cities of Mazar-i-Sharif (in Balkh Province) and Kunduz. Uzbekistan may join this railway route.
Meanwhile, deputy head of Afghanistan's railway administration, Abdul Bari Seddiqi, noted that the implementation of the project will allow Uzbekistan to gain direct access to the Iranian ports.
The project is expected to increase trade between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran and China.
