WB and Azerbaijani Education Ministry Began Preliminary Consultations on Continuation of Education Reforms

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend I.Khalilova / The World Bank (WB) has set up preliminary talks with the Azerbaijani Education Ministry to continue reforms in the education system of the country within the third project.

The Baku office of the WB announced that the education of students of pedagogical universities in accordance with the new curriculums can be included in the new project. "From 2008 the new curriculums will be applied at elementary forms, whereas the universities train teachers at old methods. So, the root changes should be carried out within the education methods. Respectively, accent at the improvement courses should be directed at new method of teaching," WB's Baku Office announced.

At the same time, the bank intends to continue technical assistance to structural changes in the education system within the framework of the second phase, because the first phase is nearing to end in March 2008.

Within the framework of its Strategy on Assistance to Azerbaijan in 2009 the WB planned to approve $20mln, though during this amount can be changed during the talks depending on the size of work.

So far, the bank has allocated $23mln to this social sector, including $5mln allotted in 1999 and $18mln in 2003.
