Collapse of Building May be Caused by Wrongly Devised Construction: Union of Architects of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend U.Ismaylova / The Union of Architects of Azerbaijan highlights two reasons for the collapse of the newly constructed building in Baku on 28 August.

"The reason for the collapse may be a wrongly devised construction [building] or the wrong implementation of the construction work," said the Vice President of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, Hafiz Amirkhanov, on 29 August.

On 28 August at around 5pm, a building being constructed by the company 'Mutafakkir' collapsed. The company's head, Asker Aliyev, was arrested for contravening article 222 (breaking safety regulations during construction and other works) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

According to Amirkhanov, the incorrect implementation of the construction work is the most likely reason for the building's collapse because it became clear during investigations that the construction work was carried out mainly by residents of Azerbaijani regions, who do not have the necessary education.

According to final reports, seven people died in the incident.

According to monitoring held by the Participants of Real Estate Market public union, in July 583 new buildings were constructed in Baku. The number of construction companies is 223 and the average number storeys of the newly constructed buildings are 15.4.
