First stage of expanding gas tank in Azerbaijan to be completed in spring 2010

By the beginning of season of gas injection into underground tanks (mid April) in 2010, SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) will complete the first phase of increasing the active volume of Garadagh underground gas tank, in which the volume of gas injection will be increased to 1.4 billion cubic meters compared to current 500 million cubic meters, Head of Azerigas JSC (sales and distribution of gas in Azerbaijan) Alikhan Melikov said on May 10.

A gas-compressor station is built in the tank for this purpose.

The second phase will expand the gas tank capacity to 2.4 billion cubic metre

There are two underground gas tanks in Azerbaijan - Garadag and Kalmaz. Kalmaz's active capacity is 1.1 billion cubic meters. Garadag's current active capacity is 500 million cubic meters.

A total of 1.4 billion cubic meters were pumped into gas tanks in autumn and winter 2008-2009.
