NATO has not yet had ideas to ensure security of the Nabucco gas pipeline, Head of the NATO Economic Security Michael Gaul said in Baku on June 10.
"There are not such ideas to ensure Nabucco's protection. In this case, first, the countries through whose territory Nabucco will pass must reach an agreement," Gaul said.
Domestic and national interests are priorities in ensuring security of oil and gas pipelines in the region, because these pipelines are a kind of domestic infrastructure in the region, Gaul said. But as an exception, NATO can assist in ensuring the safety of pipelines, if it gets proposals from the member countries.
NATO understands the importance of the Nabucco project and supports Azerbaijan. But there is not any final decision on this project at the moment. The participant countries of the project should also solve the funding issue.
"No doubt, Azerbaijan, as a producer of energy, plays an important role and it has a strong system that provides energy security of countries," said Gaul.
