The State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan signed credit agreements with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and other financial institutions for some $153 million and some 13 billion Japanese yen, Trend reportes via "Turkmen Dovlet Habarlary" (TDH).

This financing will provide for the construction of a gas turbine power plant with a capacity of 432 megawatts in Charjou district of the Lebap Region of Turkmenistan. As per the contractual agreement with the State Power Corporation "Turkmenenergo", the project is to be implemented by Japan’s “Sumitomo” in consortium with “Mitsubishi” and Turkey’s “Rönesans”.

According to the "Program of social and economic development of Turkmenistan", the total volume of electricity produced in the country during the coming 7 years is planned to be brought up to 33 billion kilowatts per hour. Build-up of the industrial potential will facilitate the further increase of the export of Turkmen electricity, primarily to Afghanistan.
