Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy talks new stage in development of energy sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 26

By Nargiz Ismayilova – Trend:

The commissioning of power plants based on renewable energy sources that meet modern requirements indicates the beginning of a new stage in the development of the energy sector, Director of the Regulation of Energy Efficiency and Ecology Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy Alasgar Hasanov told Trend.

Hasanov added that despite the fact that water resources hold a large share of renewable energy sources, large power plants that work with other energy sources also produce electricity.

The projects implemented in the field of alternative and renewable energy sources allowed Azerbaijan to effectively use the country's renewable energy potential and increase the volume of energy production, the director of ministry’s ecology department said.

Hasanov also added that these stations, including the Baku Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Plant with a capacity of 37 megawatts, (operating since December 19, 2012), the Nakhchivan Solar Power Plant with a capacity of 20 megawatts in (operating since December 1, 2015), the Wind Power Park with a capacity of 50 megawatts (put into operation by Azerishig OJSC in 2018) are designed to fully provide the population with electricity and energy security of the country.

Hasanov noted that at the same time, the use of natural gas and other resources in the generation of electricity is reduced as a result of the activities of these stations. In addition, Azerbaijan has a large number of solar and wind power stations of low power.

Presently, Azerbaijan is taking steps to develop alternative energy. For this purpose, the negotiations are underway with foreign companies and investors, including the companies from China, the UAE, the US and the EU.

The reason for the search for alternative energy sources is the need to receive it from the energy of renewable or practically inexhaustible natural resources and phenomena. Its other advantage is environmental friendliness and profitability.
