BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 10. According to the latest report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), recent data on metallurgical coal exports for February surpassed earlier expectations outlined in April, Trend reports.
As such, metallurgical coal, predominantly sourced from Appalachia, sees about 20 percent of its exports passing through the Port of Baltimore.
The unexpected surge in February exports, coupled with ongoing efforts to streamline operations at the Port of Baltimore, has led the EIA to revise its projections.
Anticipating continued momentum, metallurgical coal exports are now forecasted to reach nearly 8 million short tons (MMst) in both April and May. This marks a 13-percent increase from the previous estimate for April.
As a consequence of these developments, the EIA has revised its total coal export estimates for April and May 2024, now projecting 13 MMst, a 9-percent increase from earlier forecasts.
Looking ahead, the EIA anticipates a steady climb in coal exports, with 2024 expected to see a total of 99 MMst, up by 4 percent from previous estimates. Further growth is projected for 2025, with exports forecasted to reach 106 MMst.
