Azerbaijan’s liberated territories have high potential for solar energy - RES agency

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 4

By Khagan Isayev – Trend:

The liberated territories of Azerbaijan have a high solar energy potential, Director of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources under the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan Tabriz Ammayev said during the panel discussions of the UNEC Economic Forum, Trend reports.

According to Ammayev, initial assessments and analysis of international geographic data show that the potential of solar energy in these territories is second only to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

"Therefore, large-scale solar energy projects are possible to be launched in these territories. According to preliminary estimates, the potential of solar energy in these places is about 7,200 megawatts. Gubadli, Fuzuli, Zangilan and Jabrayil districts are rich in solar energy potential. As for wind power, preliminary studies show that the average wind speed in the mountainous regions of Lachin and Kalbajar is 7-8 meters per second at an altitude of 100 meters," he said.

Ammayev noted that this creates favorable conditions for the implementation of large-scale wind energy projects in these territories.

"Preparations have now begun for the implementation of an initial project, and to have private sector involved," he added.
