BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 28. There is a need to be better orchestrated for using technologies in the sector that are hard to decarbonize, Ben Van Beurden, CEO, Shell, said during the International Energy Agency (IEA) ministerial, Trend reports.

“Maybe we should have much more sectorial approach and think about other ways of coordinating. Hydrogen is key for the hard to abate sectors, as well as low-carbon fuels in general. We have to bear in mind that many of these sectors have power behind them. Even though we talk about green hydrogen, it is actually a green power. The challenges that we will see in the power sector are going to be bigger than what we see at the moment,” he said.

Ben Van Beurden believes that the hardest part of the hard-to-abate sectors is actually how to provide incentives to do it.

“One can say that carbon price may be a solution. But we also know from many of these sectors that the carbon price doesn’t work or carbon price should be high in order to have an effect or simply, it is not the most effective way of incentivizing. Mandates are going to be necessary and standards. Mandates are needed to bring in an obligation to adopt certain amount of green products, and standards are needed to define what actually is green. These things can only be implemented by governments, which need to support infrastructure build-up,” he added.
