BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.27. Since the start of commercial operations on the pipeline on 1st October 2021 to February 21, 2023, the Serbian-Hungarian gas pipeline has transported 5,782,649,426 cubic meters of gas, Hungarian transmission system operator FGSZ told Trend.
The volume of gas transportation stood at 4,835,230,778 cubic meters as of 2022, said the company.
The pipeline runs from Serbia to Hungary, near Kiskundorozsma, Hungary, then on to Városföld, Hungary. The pipeline’s capacity is 6 bcm/y for Stage one and 8.5-10 bcm/y for Stage two.
The European Hydrogen Backbone project indicates that a Hydrogen ready expansion for the pipeline is planned to become operational by 2030.
Natural gas ranks first in the primary energy consumption of Hungary, largely due to the fact that it is constantly available, in line with rapidly changing demand, and it’s an important energy source both in the residential heating and in the power generation segments. The level of domestic gas consumption is mostly determined by the weather during winter, and it is also largely influenced by the demand of power generation and industrial usage. Natural gas consumption shows a decreasing trend in the long term, but in recent years it has stabilized around a level of 10 billion cubic meters per year.
