Georgia to provide direct subsidies to vine-growers

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 23

Georgian government plans to spend 40 million lari ($13 million) on direct subsidies to vine-growers during the vintage of 2020, Trend reports referring to State Procurement Agency's website.

As reported, it is expected that about 20,000 winemakers will receive subsidies this year.

"Every year, in the regions of Kakheti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, about 20,000 grape grower receive the subsidies. Georgian government plans to issue up to 40 million lari [$13 million] from the state budget for this purpose," the agency said.

With the adjustment of the 2020 budget, the funding of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture will increase by 123.8 million lari ($40.2 million) and reach 476.9 million lari ($155 million). Some 80 million lari ($26 million) will be allocated for viticulture and winemaking, and half of this amount will be provided for direct subsidies.

At this stage, no details on spending the remaining funds have been provided.
