Azerbaijan’s All Villages to be Equipped with Telephones by End of 2008: Communication Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 August / corr. Trend S.Babayeva /All populated regions of Azerbaijan will be equipped with telephones by the end of 2008, Ali Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Communication and Information Technology Minister, said at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, which was dedicated to resume of social and economic development in the first half-year of 2008, held with President Ilham Aliyev's chairmanship.

"This will be possible within the framework of the state program on Electron Azerbaijan and project, which is directed to development of stationary telecommunication network of the country, on Each 100 families - 100 telephones," the Minister said.

According to Abbasov, a total of 225 villages will be connected to the telecommunication network of the country.

"The project is commercial and envisages rendering modern wideband communication services through the use of technology of new generation.

Abbasov said that the project would be realized step-by-step at the expense of technical loans and income of Aztelekom and Baktelekom Production Association (PA).

According to the data of the Azerbaijani Communication Ministry, a total of 15.1 units of telephones fall on each 100 people in Azerbaijan, while this figure amounted to 14.5 units in 2007.
