Azerbaijan's mobile operator Azerfon LLC announced its technical readiness to begin providing 3G communication service in the country, Azerfon Director General Gido Helbich told Trend today.

"We passed all legal procedures necessary to obtain license to conduct this type of activity," said Helbich.

Under the decision of the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers, to obtain a license for 3G service, operators had to submit information about the stages of work on commissioning the network, the types of services provided and on the radius of coverage of the network, on the technical characteristics of equipment, the experience of setting up a pilot zone of 3G, as well as a conclusion by the State Commission for Radio Frequencies, in accordance with the Azerbaijani law on "Telecommunications".

On Aug. 7, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree to include a paragraph envisaging issuing a license to render 3G services in the list of services that require a special license. The cost of license is 11,000 manat.

AZERFON LLC launched its commercial activities on March 21, 2007. Today the network coverage of Azerfon reaches 80 percent of territory of Azerbaijan Republic. In 2009 an agreement on non equity partnership was signed between AZERFON LLC and Vodafone PLC. Currently, over 1.5 million subscribers use the network of Azerfon.
