Some 800 branches and offices to be connected to automated system of Azerbaijani postal operator by late 2010

By late 2010, 800 branches and offices will be connected to an automated corporate information system of the postal operator LLC Azerpoct, Communications and IT Ministry Postal Communications Department Head Novruz Mammadov said.
He said so far about 700 branches and offices of the postal operator have been connected to the system.
"In the near future works on reconstruction of the telecommunications network in the north-western region are expected to be completed, which will allow automatically connect all the post offices of the five regions to the system, where in total about 120 branches and offices of postal operator operate," Mammadov said.
Some 300 units of the total number of branches and offices connected to the system have already received permission from the Central Bank of Azerbaijan to render financial services to the public.
Today, the operator is allowed to provide five of the seven existing financial services. These include opening and managing accounts, money transfers, issuance of debit card transactions for buying and selling currencies on the order book and collection of cash and other valuable means.
It is expected to provide two more additional services in future.
Azerpoct hopes to compete seriously with players on the country's banking market. Today, 47 banks operate in Azerbaijan, with over 500 branches. Meanwhile, Azerpoct has nearly 1,600 offices.
