Baku Telephone Communication LLC, Azerbaijan’s state communication operator, is preparing to implement the next stage to expand broadband Internet access using GPON (Gigabyte Passive Optical Network) technology, a source in the country’s telecommunications market told Trend.
According to the source, negotiations on the implementation of the project in large residential areas of Baku and Absheron peninsula are being held with manufacturers of telecommunication equipment.
“There are quite ambitious plans, however, everything depends on planning and preparing the budget,” the source added. “At present, GPON technology is relevant for the broadband Internet access expansion, which allows end user to access the Internet at speeds of up to 100 Mb/s. Of course, branched optical infrastructure is needed, and this requires large investments, because it is quite an expensive project.”
Nevertheless, the created optical infrastructure will serve for at least 20 subsequent years, preserving relevance in transferring large volumes of IP traffic to the end user, the source said.
“Currently, test launch of the GPON network has been implemented in the service area of the Yasamal telecommunication node, where the number of connections via this technology is about 1,000 and will be increased,” the source said.
The GPON technology allows telecommunication operator to provide Triple Play (VoIP, Data and IPTV) fiber-optic cable services, and high data transfer rate makes it possible to watch HDTV channels.
