Turkmenistan’s Turkmentelecom and Azerbaijan’s Azertelecom companies are jointly working on a project to build Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan) - Siyazan (Azerbaijan) fiber-optic communication line along the bottom of the Caspian Sea, Trend reports Nov. 28 with reference to the Turkmen Orient news agency.
The implementation of this project will allow Turkmenistan to act as a connecting bridge between Europe and Asia, the report said.
Over the past three years, the total capacity of international internet channels purchased by Turkmenistan has increased tenfold, according to the report. The number of internet users over the same period has increased in Turkmenistan by more than 500,000, and this figure is increasing daily.
An agreement on laying the Turkmenbashi-Baku fiber-optic line along the bottom of the Caspian Sea was reached in Baku in November 2010 following the meeting of the Turkmen-Azerbaijani commission on economic cooperation.
The project will make it possible to increase the speed of the internet stream.
