Uzbekistan expanding internet, mobile communication infrastructure of Samarkand region

The government of Uzbekistan will create 800,000 broadband internet ports and laid 12,000 kilometers of fiber-optic communication lines in Samarkand region during 2020, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications Development of Uzbekistan.

Since the beginning of 2020, 490,000 ports for broadband internet access have been installed, and thus, their number was brought up to 2.5 million units. About 9,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables have been laid as part of the project to expand fiber optic communication coverage. Thus, the total length of fiber optic communication lines exceeded 45,300 kilometers.

Also 101 small mini stations with the capacity of more than 37,000 telephone numbers were installed throughout the Samarkand. As a result, the total capacity of the ATE has reached 148,700 units.

In total, 57.1 billion soum ($5.5 million) were allocated for laying fiber-optic communication lines, increasing the capacity of ATEs and ports of broadband internet.

In the first half of the year 1,049.2 kilometers of fiber-optic communication lines up to 863 social objects were laid in the region. Thus, 214 general educational institutions, 237 pre-school educational institutions and 111 medical ones got access to the internet. The cost of work under the project is 16.7 billion soum ($1.6 million).

In the first half of 2020, mobile operators put into operation 95 and modernized 187 mobile base stations.

As a result, the total number of installed base stations reached 2,446 units, and mobile communication coverage of settlements in Samarkand region reached 98.9 percent. For the first half of the year, the total cost of projects on installation and modernization of base stations made up 150.7 billion soum ($14.6 million).
