A dynamic growth was observed in the number of hotel rooms commissioned in Uzbekistan in 2020 despite crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, increasing by more than 3,000 rooms, Trend reports referring to the State Committee of Uzbekistan for Tourism Development.
According to the information, the global COVID-19 pandemic triggered a worldwide crisis that affected virtually every sector of the global economy. Most of all, the crisis had a negative impact on the tourism sector, including in Uzbekistan.
The State Committee of Uzbekistan for Tourism Development reports that during the period from 2016 to 2020 the total number of hotel rooms in Uzbekistan increased from 18,100 to 29,200 units, and the increase in the total number of hotel rooms occurred in more than 11,000 rooms (increased by 1.6 times).
It was noted that the average growth rate of the number of hotel rooms amounted to 10-11 percent per year.
In addition, based on the growth rates of previous years, it is expected that the growth of the number of hotel rooms in Uzbekistan will reach 32,243 rooms in 2021.
It was also, reported that the average occupancy rate in 2019 averaged 60 percent, which is a very high occupancy rate.
“Taking into account the rise in prices, it allows ensuring a high profitability and returning on investment in the hotel business,” the committee noted.
Moreover, due to the crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic, there was a temporary decrease in the level of occupancy of the room stock to 10-15 percent per year.
According to the information, the hospitality business is expected to return to high profitability and efficiency in the coming years.
