Weekly review of highlights in Azerbaijan's transport sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 31

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

This week a planned extension of GAZ vehicle production was revealed to start on Azerbaijan's Azermash company's platform, Trend reports.

GAZ presents and manufactures a range of Gazelle NEXT, GAZon NEXT cars, and several types of buses in the Azerbaijani market on the Azermash platform.

It’s also planned to expand the range of new models of GAZ vehicles in Azerbaijan, and to launch the production of environmentally friendly GAZ buses, which will be presented next month in Azerbaijan.

The production of GAZelle NEXT Citiline (6.6 meters) GAZelle Next 65 (school bus) buses has been established in Azerbaijan. Soon it’s planned to start to assemble GAZ Vector Next buses, and after the expansion of activity and the issuance of certificates to the Azerbaijani side - to organize the assembly of big buses up to 18-meter.

Besides, in the outgoing week it was reported that the Azerbaijani Ganja Automobile Plant PU and Russian KAMAZ PJSC have reached an agreement on the construction of a service center in Azerbaijan.

According to KAMAZ Director General Sergei Kogogin, it’s necessary to build a service center in Azerbaijan for K5 vehicles.

“Today, agreements have already been reached with the Ganja Automobile Plant on the construction of such an object in Karabakh,” Kogogin said. “In the near future, a project will be developed and approved, and we, together with a partner, will begin construction of a modern service center to provide the Azerbaijani consumer with an efficient, convenient operation of the latest vehicles.”

This week it was also reported that there are good perspectives for further cooperation between Austria and Azerbaijan in the sphere of transportation.

Austria has a strong and active logistics sector, and Azerbaijan is an important hub on the Silk Road. Austrian companies are active players in the transportation of cargo on the road.

Additionally, Austria is a frontrunner in the transportation by rail, which is a sector with growing potential: rail cargo’s trains between Austria and China have already successfully used the Silk Road Connection via Azerbaijan in the last few months.

Azerbaijan is strategically positioned at the centre of the southern branch of the transcontinental railway links. The Caspian seaport of Alat offers additional opportunities for the shipment growth.

Another reported highlight of the outgoing week was that Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are working on a new draft intergovernmental agreement in the field of international road transport, which provides for the exemption of carriers of the two countries from road charges.

According to statistics, in 2020 rail freight traffic between the two countries increased by 30 percent. The transit of Azerbaijani goods through the territory of Uzbekistan by means of railway transport has almost doubled.
