Kazakhstan to launch manufacturing of Russian anti-COVID vaccine before year-end

Kazakhstan will launch manufacturing of Russian Sputnik V anti-COVID vaccine on Dec. 22, 2020, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Askar Mamin said, Trend reports citing the press office of Kazakhstan’s president.

The process of Kazakh anti-COVID vaccine development was discussed during the meeting between Kazakhstan’s President Kassym Jomart Tokayev and Prime Minister Askar Mamin.

During the meeting, Mamin informed the president of the completion of the 1st and 2nd phases of clinical trials of the Kazakh anti-COVID vaccine on November 29. In his words, no side effects were reported, and the vaccine shows high efficiency. Starting Dec. 25, 3,000 volunteers will be vaccinated as part of the 3rd phase of clinical trials. The tests will end at the end of March 2021.

Mamin also noted that the manufacturing of the first batch in the volume of 2 million doses Kazakh vaccine will be manufactured in Dec. 2020.

He also noted that in accordance with the agreement reached between presidents of Kazakhstan and Russia, the manufacturing of the Sputnik V vaccine will begin on Dec. 22.

The launch of mass voluntary vaccination of the country's population is planned from the beginning of 2021. The first stage will cover the most at-risk of infection groups of the population, including doctors, teachers, law enforcement officers.

The first two cases of coronavirus infection were detected in Kazakhstan among those who arrived in Almaty city from Germany on March 13, 2020.
