ASTANA, Kazakhstan, March 26. Kazakhstan may begin purchasing gas and electricity from Turkmenistan, said Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev during a briefing, Trend reports.
"We regularly hold consultations with our colleagues from Central Asian countries regarding the mutual exchange and supply of energy resources. In general, Turkmenistan has the ability to supply electricity. Exports to the Kyrgyz Republic are already underway. We will proceed according to our needs and the schedule of our repairs. That is, we are generally ready to consider the proposals of our Turkmen colleagues for both gas and electricity, depending on the commercial attractiveness for our consumers," the minister said.
According to Satkaliyev, there have been no official pricing
bids from Turkmenistan. Kazakh enterprises will investigate this
matter.
"We currently meet all of our customers' household electricity and
gas needs. That is, if there is an additional offer, we will
consider its commercial viability," he stated.
Speaking about Turkmenistan potentially replacing Russia as a
supplier of gas and electricity to Kazakhstan, the minister stated
that this is dependent on the attractiveness of the offer.
"If Turkmenistan’s offer is interesting, we are ready to accept it to protect the interests of Kazakh consumers," he said.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of Turkmenistan's People's Council, stated previously at the 15th meeting of the Council of Elders of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Ashgabat that Turkmenistan may export a considerable volume of energy resources to Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Kazakhstan.
