ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 6. Preliminary results show that 63.87% of voters participated in Kazakhstan’s referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant, Trend reports.

The Central Election Commission reported that 7.8 million out of 12.24 million eligible voters cast their ballots.

Regionally, Kyzylorda saw the highest turnout at 82.48%, while Almaty recorded the lowest at 25.39%.

Voting took place on October 6 across Kazakhstan.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev set the referendum date on September 2, 2024.

In 2023, the Ministry of Energy identified four main contenders for the nuclear power plant project: China’s CNNC, South Korea’s KHNP, France’s EDF, and Russia’s Rosatom. The project will also involve oversight from international organizations like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
