Some 16 residents of Batken province who were taken hostage in Uzbekistan have been released, KirTAG reported, citing acting Spokesman of the Batken District State Administration, Mamazhan Berdishev.

"As a result of negotiations between the two sides, 16 hostages were released," Berdishev said.

He said, the head of Sokh district Tabakal Rahimov said that the Uzbek government will guarantee reparations for the costs of burned cars and the payment of moral compensation to Kyrgyz citizens taken hostage in the Sokh enclave by citizens of Uzbekistan.

As Kyrgyz news agency AKIpress reported earlier referring to its own correspondent in the south of the republic, several hundred residents of the Uzbek enclave Sokh attacked a Kyrgyz border post, located in the Kyrgyz Batken district.

According to the agency, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon. A large group of people from the Uzbek village Hushyar attacked Kyrgyz border guards, who were installing support for power lines to provide electricity supply to the border zone. Villagers tried to take away military firearms from the soldiers, some guards were wounded, RIA Novosti reported.
