A new electoral code which is being published in the local press has come into force in Turkmenistan. The government report mentioned earlier that the new document has been developed in accordance with international norms and standards.

The Code regulates relations arising in preparing and holding the presidential elections, the elections of MPs, members of the local self-government bodies - People's Council and Gengeshy, as well as referendums. It aims to ensure the free will of Turkmen citizens.

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) rendered the consultations in the development of a unified election code.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting with MPs in February this year that the end of their term of office in 2013 requires a solid base for MPs for the next convocation, as well as to elect new parliamentarians at a high organisational and political level.

Representatives of at least two parties - the Democratic Party and the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs created in early 2013 will stand against each other in the Turkmen parliamentary elections.
