Implementation of the Turkmen-German project, “The Ecosystem Approach in managing land and forest resources in the area of the Amudarya River to improve the life of the local community as adaptation to climate change”, is being completed, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported Nov. 23.

A memorandum of understanding on this issue was signed two years ago by Turkmenistan’s State Committee for Environmental Protection and Land Resources and Germany’s Michael Succow Foundation for the Protection of Nature.

The project was aimed at preserving vulnerable tugay forests with rare, valuable species of living organisms, reducing environmental and socio-economic problems caused by atypical weather events, shortage of water supply, and population growth.

The work was carried out in the north-eastern part of Turkmenistan’s Lebap Province.

As a result, a regional map of the location and condition of the coastal tugay forests of the Amudarya was developed.
