Large-scale work on the creation of forest plantations in the Syrdarya region is being carried out within the framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization / Global Environment Facility (FAO/GEF) project on sustainable forest management in mountainous and valley regions of Uzbekistan, Trend reports citing FAO office in Uzbekistan.

According to the message, these measures will provide the local population with additional income and new jobs.

It is noted that the FAO Representative Office in Uzbekistan planted more than 30,000 seedlings of maple, ash, poplar, mulberry, elm and silverberry on the territory of 20 hectares of the Syrdarya forestry. Also, 10,000 seedlings were transferred to the local population to create green spaces in their personal plots.

The technical coordinator of the FAO project Olimjon Kakhkharov said that trainings were held on planting, care and soil preparation in order to educate local residents. "The representative office created demonstration plots of forest plantations in the Gulistan region, forest shelter belts in the Boyavut region, as well as a nursery for ornamental and forest plantations in the Shirinsky district of the Syrdarya region."

The FAO/GEF project on "Sustainable Forest Management in Mountainous and Valley Areas of Uzbekistan" is aimed at increasing the sustainability and conservation of forest biodiversity, broadly involving local residents in forest management processes, improving the well-being of the population, and promoting the implementation of advanced ideas in the forest fund.

The project is being implemented in four territories representing different types of forest ecosystems in Uzbekistan - the Syrdarya, Dehkanabad, Kitab and Pap state forestry. The project demonstration areas are located in both mountainous and valley regions of the forest fund.
