TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, August 16. Uzbekhydroenergo JSC, Uzbekistan's energy company, is initiating a tender for the construction of five new hydroelectric power stations with a combined capacity of 46.6 MW, Trend reports.

According to the Ministry of Energy of the country, Uzbekistan is actively executing an extensive strategy to bolster renewable energy, aiming to introduce cost-effective and environmentally friendly generation methods to meet the growing electricity demand within the country.

In light of this, Uzbekhydroenergo is commencing the procurement process for the first lot of new hydropower plants in Uzbekistan, operating on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

The initial lot encompasses five new hydropower plants, collectively estimated to have a capacity of around 46.6 MW, including the necessary evacuation infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan has adopted a system of green energy certificates. Thus, from July 1, 2023, the system was adopted for electricity generated at hydroelectric power plants of the Uzbekhydroenergo JSC, hydroelectric power producer, then, from October 1, 2023, will be available for electricity generated by solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants.

One green energy certificate confirms the generation of 1,000 kWh of electricity. The adoption of this system is being implemented by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

At the same time, according to the decree, the income of generation facilities received from the sale of green energy certificates based on the use of renewable energy sources is exempt from income tax.

The newly deployed capacity of renewable electricity put into operation in Uzbekistan will be 2,000 MW by the end of 2023, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev said at the opening of the second Tashkent International Investment Forum (ТIIF-2023) on April 27.

According to Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan has outlined the development of electricity production through renewable energy sources as one of the main directions of the economy.

"Over the next three years, this figure will quadruple - up to eight MW," he noted.
