EBRD plans to invest in green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, January 29. EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) plans to invest $5.5 million to support the construction of an integrated renewable hydrogen production facility in Uzbekistan, Trend reports.

The facility comprises of a 20 MW electrolyser driven by a greenfield 52 MW wind power station that will generate approximately 3,000 tons of sustainable hydrogen annually.

The electrolyser will be built in Chirchiq, Tashkent, and the wind power plant in Gijduvon, Bukhara. The wind farm will be positioned alongside the existing 500 MW EBRD-financed Uzbekistan Bash WPP. The loan will be guaranteed by UzKimyoSanoat JSC.

The project aims to support the decarbonization of Uzbekistan's ammonia sector and increase renewable energy generation.

Moreover, this is a first-of-its-kind renewable hydrogen production project in Uzbekistan and across Central Asia, providing an important demonstration effect to stimulate further projects.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan became the leading recipient of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) financing in Central Asia for the fourth consecutive year in 2023.

Uzbekistan attracted more than $760 million in financing from the bank. The rest of the investments ($560 million) were channeled to support projects in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Tajikistan.
