Iran plans to make movie about "US-abducted" scientist

Iran plans to shoot a TV movie about the Iranian scientist allegedly abducted by the United States, Fars news agency reported Wednesday.

The case of Shahram Amiri caused worldwide attention earlier this month, with Iran claiming the scientist was abducted by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and detained for 14 months, DPA reported.

The US rejected the accusations and in return claimed Amiri had defected and provided the CIA with information on Iran's nuclear activities.

The Sima film studio, which is affiliated to state television network IRIB, now plans to turn the alleged abduction into a made-for-TV movie.

Sima studio head Amir-Hossein Ashtianipour said that the script, based on the real events, is currently being prepared.

IRIB produced several special programmes on the Amiri case reminiscent of the Cold War era between the US and the Soviet Union.

After his return to Iran last week Amiri said he had been abducted by the CIA in June 2009 in Saudi Arabia, and forcefully transported to the US in an American military plane.

He further claimed that US and Israeli interrogators tortured him for two months and forced to him to claim he had come to the US voluntarily for disclosing classified information on Iran's military nuclear programmes.

Western powers, including the US and Israel, accuse Tehran of pursuing a secret nuclear weapons programme, a charge Iran denies.
