The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday condemned the terror attack on a prominent member of Afghanistan's High Council of Peace, Fars reported.

On Sunday, gunmen assassinated Maulavi Arsala Rahmani, a former high-ranking Taliban official working to end the decade-long war in Afghanistan.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast condemned the assassination of Rahmani, and stressed that the criminal act has been carried out by "opponents of the establishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan".

The spokesman expressed regret that foreign forces in Afghanistan are incapable of providing security in the war-torn country and protecting the lives of influential figures.

"The continued presence of the alien forces in Afghanistan has not only failed to establish security and tranquility, but also escalated insecurity."

Meantime, a spokesman for the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid, said they were not responsible for the killing.

In September 2011, a Taliban emissary to the High Peace Council hid a bomb in his turban and assassinated the leader of the council, Burhanuddin Rabbani, a former Afghan president.

Five senior Afghan officials, who were present in the gathering, were also killed in the explosion. Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.
