Salafchegan special economic zone to be connected to Iran’s national railroad

The Salafchegan special economic zone located in central Iran, will be connected to the country's national railroad by the end of the current calendar year (March 20, 2013), said the managing director of the Salafchegan special economic zone.

The IRNA News Agency quoted Ebadollah Kamkar as saying that some 60 per cent of major industries are located within a 230 kilometre radius of Salafchegan. The zone is also near large cities such as Tehran, Isfahan, Arak and Qom.

Exporting and re-exporting goods, importing raw materials as well as semi-finished products, loading and unloading facilities are among the advantages of the Salafchegan special economic zone, he noted.

Over 3.4 million tons of goods were transited through Iran during the first quarter of the current calendar year which began on March 20, showing 30.8 per cent compared to the same period last year, the IRNA News Agency quoted the deputy roads and urban development minister Shahryar Afandizadeh as saying.

Some 25,000 kilometres of railway is in operation across the country, the deputy roads and urban development minister Ahmad Sadeqi has said. He added that by the next two years all the country's provinces will be connected together through the railroad network.
