Deputy head of National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) Mehran Mokvandi has explained the details of containment of an oil well blowout, Shana reported.

Mokvandi said Well 120 of oil-rich Rag Sefid zone in southern Iran had experienced blowout when drilling operations reached 2,403 meters deep in Asmari Formation.

He said the blowout occurred following gas leak in side valve tubing head spool.

"After the declaration of state of emergency, NIDC quickly dispatched a blowout prevention team to the place," he said, adding that Fath drilling equipment were used for securing the well.

Mokvandi noted that the zone of accident was cordoned off by technicians from NIDC and National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC) in a bid to avoid environmental catastrophes and blaze.

The official said drilling liquid was injected into the well after side valves were repaired.

"Oil and gas well blowouts are susceptible to occur again, but engineers and technicians can minimize damage," he added.

Mokvandi said the well kill operation ended without any casualties or financial damage.
