Iran increases LPG price by 16 percent

Azerbaijan, Baku, July 24/ Trend, N. Umid/

Iran's Organization for the Protection of Consumers and Producers (POCP) has increased
Liquefied petroleum gas's (LPG) sell price by 16 percent, Mehr news agency reported.

It was noted that the prices increased by 16 percent on each gas cylinder (of various sizes), while the base price for buying has not increased.

According to the report, increase of illegal LPG consumption in transportation vehicles and rising costs of LPG`s distribution are the main reasons for this decision.

Currently, just 16 LPG stations are in operation across the country, meanwhile there are also unknown numbers of illegal stations which supply LPG for vehicles, the report said.

The Iranian government has decided to raise the number of LPG stations as gasoline consumption has recently increased.

For the time being, LPG has a 5 percent share in the fuel basket of cars in Iran.

Iran is currently producing 12.5 million liters of LPG per day, up from nine million liters in 2005, Press TV quoted Iranian Deputy Oil Minister, Alireza Zeighami as saying on April 14.

The country has become self-sufficient in the production of LPG.
