Serbia calls for expansion of economic ties with Iran

In a Saturday meeting with Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, Dacic said both countries would benefit from closer relations in all spheres.

Dacic slammed double standards pursued by some major powers against the Iranian nation, saying the West is using international laws as an excuse to enforce its own interests.

Serbia is one of the countries that have been victim to the double standards of this kind of countries, he added.

Larijani, for his part, expressed Iran's readiness to improve cooperation with Serbia to achieve the desirable objectives of both sides.

The Iranian official criticized West's double standards vis-a-vis Iran's peaceful nuclear program, saying "despite the fact that we have repeatedly stated we are not seeking nuclear weapons, the fatwa [decree] against the development of nuclear weapons by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution [Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei] and being member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), they still pressure us and at the same time ignore the nuclear warheads owned by some regimes.

The Iranian Majlis speaker's trip to the Balkan country comes at the invitation of his Serbian counterpart, Nebojsa Stefanovic. He is also scheduled to travel to Geneva to participate in the 129th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, stressing that as a committed member of the IAEA and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
