Iran appreciates Oman's role in resolving regional and international problems, Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif said, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on Jan. 29.

Zarif made the remarks during a meeting with Oman's new ambassador to Tehran, Saud bin Ahmed bin Khalid Al Barwani.

Zarif underlined the various grounds for the expansion of the relations, in particular economic ties between Tehran and Muscat and expressed hope for the further enhancement of all-out ties.

He further said that the visit of the Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said to Iran and the mutual respect between the two countries' senior officials indicate the serious determination of both sides to boost bilateral relations.

Sultan Qaboos visited Iran in August as first foreign leader after Hassan Rouhani assumed the presidency.

Ambassador Al Barwani expressed hope for boosting the bilateral ties, especially in the areas of economy and trade.

Oman and Iran, which share control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, maintain friendly relations. Oman has mediated between Iran and the U.S. on a number of cases including the three U.S. citizens who were arrested in Iran in 2009 on illegal entry and espionage charges and were released during 2010 and 2011.

In its latest successful mediation effort, in April 2013, Oman secured the release of Mojtaba Atarodi, an Iranian scientist held by the U.S. since late 2011 on charges of violating U.S. sanctions.
