Iran electricity exports rise by 3 per cent

Iran exported 9.732 gigawatt hours of electricity to neighboring countries from the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20) until January 29, Iran's IRIB News Agency reported.

The amount shows a 3 per cent increase in comparison to the same period last year.

The country's power generation capacity is currently over 70 gigawatts.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.

Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.

Tehran is the Middle East's biggest electricity generator.
