Iran's parliament asks government to boost Tabriz water transfer plan

TEHRAN, Iran, Sept. 20

The plan to transfer water from the Araz River in northwest Iran to Tabriz in East Azarbaijan Province is a 10-year project, which has to be handed over to a strong contractor as soon as possible, Iranian MP Mohammadreza Mirtajeddini said, Trend reports via Tasnim News Agency.

Mirtajeddini said the necessary preconditions for the tender pn the issue have been announced.

He went on to ask the Ministry of Energy, Economy and the Planning and Budget Organization to hold the decision-making meeting, as soon as possible.

The MP further emphasized that the parliament should increase the allocated credit for the project in the next Iranian year's budget bill (starts on March 21, 2022).

The length of the water transmission pipeline from Araz River to Tabriz is 140 kilometers, of which about 35 km have been completed.

According to the Governor of East Azerbaijan Province Moahammadreza Pourmohammadi, although environmental permits have been issued by the Department of Environment, the remaining 105 km are still on hold, waiting for necessary funds to come in.
