Tehran, Iran, July 1

By A. Shirazi - Trend:

An official with Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry said his country plans to increase the export of livestock products to Iran.

“Currently, Brazil is supplying one-third of Iran’s total livestock need and we plan to increase this in the near future,” Rodrigo Mata, the head of Brazilian Agriculture Ministry’s Foreign Investment Department, told Trend on July 1.

He added Brasilia is also weighing a plan to export prepared food products to the country as the South American country has gained a foothold in the Iran’s market.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of the 25th International Exhibition of Agricultural Industries, Food, Machinery and Related Industries, also known as ‘Agrofood 2018’ underway at Tehran’s International Permanent Fairground tomorrow.

More than 400 domestic and foreign firms are participating in the event. The exhibition kicked off on June 29 and will come to an end on July 2.

Mata said the exhibition has given Brazilian firms an excellent opportunity to get more familiar with their Iranian counterparts.

Referring to impending US sanctions against Iran, the Brazilian official said, “The sanctions are for all the countries that are trading with Iran. But, despite the sanctions, we are resolved to continue to work with Iran as sanctions may not be in place tomorrow and we should think about our future trade”.

About 820,000 tons of red meat, accounting for 90% of the domestic demand, are produced in Iran every year. Annual imports stand at about 100,000 tons.

Iran imports beef mainly from Brazil and lamb from Australia, Armenia, Georgia, Dagestan, Mongolia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
