BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 27. Iran may become a gasoline exporter by reducing daily gasoline consumption by 40-50 million liters, Iran's Deputy Oil Minister and head of the National Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORC) Jalil Salari said, Trend reports.

According to Salari, 24 million passenger cars and 6 million motorcycles consume 120 million liters of gasoline in the country. The private passenger cars in the country do not consume gasoline in standard form. Since passenger cars do not meet the required standards, the consumption of gasoline is much higher.

The deputy minister stated that from the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2024) until today, the country has consumed an average of 119 million liters of gasoline daily. Gasoline consumption has increased by 4.6 percent compared to the same period last year.

Salari added that, additionally, about 64 million liters of diesel fuel are consumed daily by 1 million heavy-duty trucks in the country. Heavy trucks in Iran consume 65 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. However, the global standard is 30 liters.

Salari stressed that optimizing energy consumption in the country should be one of the most important tasks. Special attention should be paid to gasoline consumption.
"Currently, one of the main reasons for high gasoline consumption in Iran is the limited amount of public transport, intercity railways, and airlines, or high prices," he emphasized.

To note, Iran's 10 oil refineries currently process 2.25 million barrels of crude oil and gas condensate daily and produce 112 million liters of gasoline daily. Currently, more than 70 percent of the gasoline and diesel produced in the country - 75 million liters of gasoline and 70 million liters of diesel - are produced to Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards. It is expected that by March 20, 2027, more than 75 percent of the gasoline and diesel produced will be produced to Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards.
