Tehran, Iran, May 30
By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:
US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif started a new round of negotiations over Iran 's nuclear program in Geneva .
Their meeting started at 10:30 local time. Iranian deputies foreign minister Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-Ravanchi as well as US under secretary of state Wendy Sherman and EU foreign policy deputy chief Helga Schmid also attended the meeting, Iran's Fars news agency reported May 30.
This makes the first meeting between the two top diplomats after Iran and the group P5+1 (the US, UK , France , Russia , China , and Germany ) reached a framework agreement on April 2 in Lausanne .
A final statement of that round of talks said the sides are to reach a comprehensive deal by June 30.
Iranian diplomat Hamid Baidinejad said after a round of expert talks that there has been some progress on drafting the final agreement.
However, a member of the Iranian expert team said that Zarif and Kerry are meeting to resolve a delay in drafting the agreement. The six powers are trying to limit Iran 's nuclear program through the deal, whereas Iran insists doing so is bound to the removal of all international sanctions on its economy.
