Iran begins enriching uranium at Fordo nuclear facility

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 5

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran has begun enriching uranium to 20 percent at the Fordo nuclear facility, Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Agency Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said, Trend reports.

The spokesman noted that enrichment of uranium is already at a stable level.

He added that the enrichment of uranium is aimed at implementing a strategic action plan to lift sanctions against Iran.

According to Kamalvandi, Iran produced 20-percent enriched uranium in 2010, so current production is not new potential. Iran has the potential to enrich uranium more than 20 percent, and this potential is currently being explored.

The Iranian parliament has recently decided to implement a strategic plan to lift sanctions, citing the non-implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed between Iran and six countries and the imposition of sanctions on Iran.
