The Japanese experts will visit West Azerbaijan province to observe the situation in Lake Urmia, the deputy head of this province Hadi Bahaduri said, İRNA agency reported.

Iran and Japan have reached an agreement on taking necessary measures by Japanese experts to prevent the drying of Lake Urmia, according to Bahaduri.

Bahaduri said that the Japanese experts will investigate the causes of the drying of Lake Urmia and the ways of its salvation.

Lake Urmia covers nearly 6,000 square kilometers of area. During the migration of migratory birds, the lake becomes their temporary home. Because of the prolonged drought, Urmia shallows, having an impact on the flora and fauna of the region. Experts on environmental issues say that the measures taken by the Iranian government to save the lake are insufficient.

Some 3.1 billion cubic meters of water per year is needed for saving the Lake Urmia. Each liter of water in the lake contains around 330 grams of salt. Earlier, this figure amounted to 160-170 grams per liter.
