Another nominee may abandon Armenia’s presidential race

Presidential candidate Arman Melikyan may abandon the election campaign, Panarmenian.net reported.

In case of non-compliance with the law during elections, there are two scenarios for the nominee. He and his team might claim they don't recognize the legitimacy of the election and drop from the presidential race.

"My name will not be included in the ballot list as a candidate, although the election will continue. But there is another option. On the eve of the election, we may state that the elections are illegitimate, regardless of the fact that my name being on the list, and of the outcome of elections," the candidate for president of Armenia said during a meeting with reporters on January 22.

Melikyan stated that this is not a challenge and he has no desire to denigrate anyone.
Earlier, the leader of the National Accord party, Armenian presidential candidate Aram Harutyunyan said that he will withdraw his candidacy on February 8.

The sixth Armenian presidential election will be held Feb. 18 from 08:00 to 20:00 local time. The head of state is elected for five years.

Those running for the presidency are the incumbent president and ruling Republican Party leader Serzh Sargsyan, former Prime Minister Grant Bagratyan, chairman of the Heritage Party Raffi Hovhannisyan, head of the Liberty Party Paruyr Hayrikyan, Arman Melikyan, Andreas Ghukasyan, Vardan Setrakian and the leader of the National Accord party Aram Harutyunyan.
