Once the investigation is complete, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia will destroy the tapping archive made by the Ministry's former management, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili said at the conference 'Civil control over the prevention of of tapping," initiated by the Civic Platform and media representatives.

"I confirm that we have done away with illegal wiretapping, but it is not enough to say that. Real actions are necessary to confirm that this is not done anymore. I reiterate that illegal wiretapping was done away with in our Ministry after a new government took the office. The Prime Minister speaks the truth: when there is no ideology and will providing for spying and tapping in a country, this will not happen," Garibashvili said.

According to him, after he was appointed a minister, several officers of the Constitutional Security Department (CSD) were caught wire tapping and were brought to justice.

"Mass tapping was conducted both by phone and computer. The Prime Minister's family and I were among the victims. The CSD created viruses and infected thousands of computers. We have abolished this department and put everything in order. We have the opportunity conduct legitimate tappings, and this is done only in compliance with the law," Irakli Garibashvili said.

According to him, once the investigation of the illegal wiretappings is completed, the entire collection created by the Ministry's former administration will be destroyed.

"Some people still need to be questioned, including the former deputy interior minister Meskheli and other senior officials. As soon as we finish the investigation, the archive will be immediately destroyed, possibly in public," Garibashvili said.
