The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the admittance of observers of the Council of Europe to the separatist regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Jagland announced this following the meeting with the First Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia David Zalkaliani.
"This is about a monitoring mission. Until now we did not have such a possibility, but are working on this issue. I raised this issue during the meeting with the President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia. I hope we will be able to record in a future report that the monitoring mission has been allowed into the conflict zone," Jagland said.
Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
