Some 51 cases of HIV infection were recorded in Georgia in December 2014, Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Scientific Practical Centre told Trend on Jan.19.

Some 4,697 HIV-infected (3,449 males and 1,248 females) were registered in the country as of Dec.31, 2014, the center said.

The majority of the patients are aged between 29-40 years. AIDS developed in 2,827 patients. Some 977 of them have already died.

The center said that 566 new cases of HIV infection were registered in the country in 2014. Around 2,426 people, including 304 patients from Abkhazia are undergoing medical treatment.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a subgroup of retrovirus) that causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive. Without treatment, average survival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV subtype. Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk.
