Georgian honey exports skyrocket, following COVID-ravaged year

Georgia's export of natural honey from January through August 2021 has increased 33 times, compared to the same period of 2020, and 80 percent of the product went to the EU markets, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Georgia exported 116.5 tons of natural honey worth $98,000 from January through August 2021, compared to 3.5 tons over the reporting period of 2020.

TOP-5 importers of Georgian honey over the reporting period of 2021:

Bulgaria – 49.8 tons ($107,000)

France – 43.8 tons ($196,900)

Russia – 10 tons ($7,500)

UAE – 2.9 tons ($18,800)

The US - 1.4 tons ($13,800)

Georgia has another 90 tons of honey ready to be exported abroad, Aleko Papava, head of Georgian Beekeepers' Union said.

Georgian honey exports have already increased in France and Bulgaria. Demands are also coming from other countries, such as the US, Canada, Arab countries, Papava said.

“It is good that Georgian honey export has intensified, but we want to increase these numbers even more,” the head of the Union said.
